Oh To Be Small

As long as I can remember, I’ve always thought of myself as “big”. By the time I was 10 or 11 years old, I’d already hit my adult height of 5’4”, which felt so much taller than my peers. I hated being tall – taller than my friends, taller than the boys. As we all know, standing out in any way, particularly when we’re young, feels scary and alienating. I was never teased about my height, but it bothered me. It didn’t help that I was also fat, of course. I was big times two. As an adult, my height is actually on the lower end of average for a woman, so I’m no longer considered tall and haven’t been for most of my life. I still feel big though, because of my body type. The truth is I love the idea of being small. Little. Tiny. Any time I feel that way, I feel happy, delicate, feminine…I hate to say it, but probably more beautiful too. I think what I feel most is precious. Not precious as in pretentious, but precious as in valuable. Because I was bigger than most kids, I was never described as cute, adorable, precious. I wanted to be precious.

When I found this oversized Adirondack chair at Safeway…..well, I think you know why I hopped right in.

Outfit Post #77: Ripped

This is my first pair of ripped jeans. The trend never got me in the 80’s or 90’s, but I’m getting ripped now. My dad loves to ask “Can’t you afford a pair of jeans without holes in them??” I love him.

Usually I think Ugg shoes are pretty ugg, but these are my favorite wedges EVER.

Outfit Post #76: The Cold Shoulder

Cold shoulder and off-the-shoulder tops and dresses are very trendy right now. I have to say, I find the off-the-shoulder style kind of uncomfortable because you have to keep pulling down the shoulders. That said, I’ve only really tried one top, so I should probably do more research before drawing any conclusions. I find the cold shoulder style more comfortable and really like this top.

Outfit Post #75: Fattitude

When you just got your hair done and you have a new dress and the weather is beautiful, you have to do a blog post.

Outfit Post #74: Shapely Hips

I’ve talked about this before, but I like to try out different shapes and silhouettes even though my go-to is the fit and flare. I really liked the shape of this dress when I saw it online. I thought it was interesting, pretty, and oddly flattering, despite adding extra volume to the hips.  The print made me happy too.

Outfit Post #73: Red is for Love

I meant to post this outfit for Valentine’s Day, but didn’t get my shit together. Fortunately, nothing bad has ever happened from someone being over a week late for Valentine’s Day. Am I right? 😉

Speaking of love, this picture looks fake, but it’s a real picture of the real life duck couple that have taken residence in my apartment building’s pool. They’re always together. In the pool. Is anything more adorable?

Outfit Post #72: Baby, It’s Cold Outside!

We rarely get snow in my neck of the woods, but we’ve had a lot more than usual this winter. Fortunately, novel weather makes for new and exciting wardrobe possibilities, like the new toque I bought at a Christmas market (SO comfortable). I’m also sporting my new leggings from http://additionelle.com which honestly aren’t super warm, but are definitely super cute. I’m into the whole printed leggings thing and these are great.

Btw: I have, on more than one occasion, been confronted by a stranger in the street asking me “Did you really get that in New York??”, referring to my hoodie. For the record to those haters, yes, I surely did get it in NYC – so mind ya business! 😉

Outfit Post #71: Black Sweater Dress

Well, an all black outfit seems appropriate for this week’s events. This dress is super comfortable, and I’ve added a little sass with the leopard print pumps. At least if the world ends, I’ll be going out in style 🙂

Outfit Post #70: These Pants Though

These pants are from Nadia Aboulhosn’s latest collection for Addition Elle. I’ve paired them with a top from her collection from last year. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to find enough occasions to wear them, but I loved them so much I couldn’t not buy them. I’ve actually worn them twice since I bought them a couple of weeks ago. The first time was to the grocery store 🙂
